FIRST SATURDAY OF ADVENT
JOSEPH
SCRIPTURE READING: Genesis 37 - 39
Joseph’s
story is one of perseverance, trust, and God’s providence. Favored by his
father, Jacob, Joseph was given a richly ornamented coat, which stirred
jealousy among his brothers. They betrayed him, selling him into slavery in
Egypt. Despite his hardships—slavery, false accusations, and
imprisonment—Joseph remained faithful to God, trusting in His plan.
Through
God’s guidance, Joseph rose to a position of power in Egypt, where he saved
many lives during a severe famine. When he was reunited with his brothers,
Joseph showed forgiveness and grace, recognizing that God had used their
actions for good: “You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good” (Genesis
50:20).
Joseph’s
life points to Jesus, who was also betrayed and suffered but brought about
salvation for humanity. Joseph’s story teaches us to trust in God’s plan, even
when life seems unfair, and to extend forgiveness to others as God forgives us.
