SECOND MONDAY OF ADVENT
ISARAELITES, PASSOVER AND EXODUS
SCRIPTURE READING: Exodus 12:1 through 14:31
The
story of the Israelites, the Passover, and the Exodus is
one of deliverance, faith, and God’s unwavering love for His people. The
Israelites, enslaved in Egypt for 400 years, cried out to God, and He heard
their prayers. God sent Moses to lead them to freedom.
The
night before their deliverance, God instructed the Israelites to sacrifice a
spotless lamb and mark their doorposts with its blood. The angel of death
“passed over” their homes, sparing them from the final plague. This event,
known as the Passover, symbolizes God’s protection and the power of
obedience and faith. Following the Passover, the Israelites began their journey
out of Egypt, known as the Exodus. When Pharaoh pursued them, God
parted the Red Sea, allowing them to escape safely. This miraculous
deliverance shows God’s mighty power and His desire to free His people from
bondage.
These events foreshadow Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, whose sacrifice frees us from the slavery of sin. Just as the Israelites were delivered through the blood of the lamb and the waters of the Red Sea, we are delivered through the blood of Jesus and the waters of baptism.
